"Bathing in the river bed, a shower under the waterfall and much more..."

Hike in the footsteps of the Greeks through nearly dried up river beds, climb the high peaks under the lush green of the beech forests, take a shower under a waterfall an enjoy stunning sea views... All this offers the Aspromonte National Park in the summer. Our accomodations will be an agritourism farm midst of a bergamot plantation and the comfortable Biancospino Lodge, where we will be spoiled with delicious Calabrian specialities.

Detailed Programme

Sunday: Arrival

Arrival at the airport of Lamezia Terme. We will drive along the Tyrrhenian coast towards the southern part of Calabria. We will be accommodated at a charming agritourism farm in the middle of a bergamot plantation.

Monday: Following the footsteps of the Greeks

We will start our day hiking up to Bova, the main town in the Area Grecanica (Calabria’s Greek area). Here the majority of older people still speak Greek. After that, we will return to our accommodation passing by the ruins of the Amendolea Castle; on the way we will enjoy the breathtaking landscape of the area. Late in the afternoon we will take a walk in the bergamot plantation. (Duration: about 5 hours; altitude: 650m).

Tuesday: River Amendolea

This morning we will descend to the Amendolea riverbed and wade through it. Then we will walk across a meadow full of lovely flowers to reach a secluded little village called Galliciaṇ: around 50 inhabitants live there at the moment. Our way back  takes us down into the riverbed wher we can refresh in the cool water. A little through the water, a little along the shore, it goes back to our accommodation. (Duration: about 5,5 hours, altitude: 470 m)

Wednesday: Valley of the Big Stones

It is time to leave the Greek area. Our trip now takes us around the southern tip of Calabria up to Capo Bruzzano, an important breeding site of the caretta caretta sea turtles.  Here we will have a short, relaxing stop for a swim in the sea. After that, we will be ready to continue our walk up the mountain through the wood and around Pietra Cappa: the most spectacular monolith in ‘The Valley of the Big Stones’. During the trip we will come across some unique rock formations known as Rocce di San Pietro (St. Peter’s Rocks) which were formerly a place where the Basilian monks took refuge. From there we can have another gorgeous view over the Ionian Sea. After our trip will continue towards Piani di Carmelia where we will move into our second accommodation, the Biancospino Lodge. (Duration: about 4 hours; altitude: 400 m).

Thursday: On the top of Montalto

Departure directly from the Piani di Carmelia and hike to the summit of Montalto, which takes us through magnificent beech and silver fir forests. It is interesting to observe how the trees' growth
changes to weak, stunted bushes because of the snow and the wind the higher you go and the more one approaches the summit. The view from the top is simply superb: you can simultaneously see the Straits of Messina, Etna, the Ionian and the Tyrrhenian Sea, the Aeolian Islands, and the most southern tip of the Apennines. (Duration: about 6.5 hours, altitude: 700

Friday: Waterfalls, mountain tops and a picturesque town

Today it is time for a bit of recovery and culture. After a short drive we will start our hike to the Galasia Waterfalls which fall down into the valley amidst lush vegetation and invite us to take a shower and plunge into water. After another short drive and a one hour walk we will reach another viewpoint and have a breathtaking sight of the sea. We will come back following the same route and drive to the medieval town of Gerace with its famous cathedral. (Duration: about 4 hours; altitude: 300 m).

Saturday: Polsi

On our last day we will enjoy a beautiful challenging walk: after a short drive, we will follow an easy path to Mount Fistocchio and enjoy the magnificent view over both sides of Calabria. After that, our descent route takes us down to Polsi, the most important pilgrimage place in the Aspromonte. On the 2nd September, believers from the closer and further environment walk for many hours to be present at the Marian feast. Deep religiosity, pagan customs and the rhythm of the tarantella mix here together, surrounded by a stunning landscape and a entrancing atmosphere. On the way there is also time  to hear stories and old legends about Polsi. (Duration: about 5.5 hours; altitude: 650 m)
